It has been a full two years now since I have been on the summer track circuit and I am really looking forward to getting back to it. I didn’t intentionally take two years off but with the Olympics last year, I was doing strictly marathon training and I had to focus my energy on long marathon specific racing and training. I have to admit it has taken me a little while to get my legs and form back under me but I feel like I am getting very strong and fast, and I think I will be able to have a great season and hopefully some big prs.
This will be new for me to go over and race the second half of the track season after the world championships break. In the past I would always race early and then be done early. It made more sense for me to do it this way because since I did the London Marathon at the end of April I really wouldn’t be that much more fit for track racing if I was to just jump into the early summer track season. I would basically be in the same shape as I was at USA’s. This way I get in a really good seven week training block before the World Champs, and I will be fresh when many people are tired. That is the hope anyway.
It is always challenging to change what you have been doing but I have really been seeing the benefits. I am starting to feel like I did when I ran 8:11 for 2 miles and I think I was in very good 5k-10k shape at that time. I have been really fit a few times but never had the right races to put together fast time. Hopefully I can get there again but first I am hoping to really be competitive at the World Champs 10k on Aug. 17th. I will have to be ready to roll because the Kenyans and Ethiopians are always ready to go. Time for an afternoon supplemental Alter-G run. Until next time…
